Seroxat videos

I thought I’d start a page to hold all the various Seroxat videos that are out there. I intend to slowly build up the archive so it can act as a handy reference point for all those interested in finding out more, starting with Taken on Trust, a seven part Panorama programme, originally broadcast here in the UK on 21 September 2004:

Taken on Trust 1-7

Taken on Trust – We take it on trust that the drugs our doctors prescribe are safe and effective. But this special investigation exposed huge failings in the system of medicines regulation that is supposed to monitor drug safety. It revealed how patients’ lives have been put at risk as a result.

Panorama took a unique journey inside the secret world of the medicines regulator and discovered that it had been sitting on crucial safety information about one of Britain’s most widely-prescribed antidepressants for over a decade. Panorama had been investigating claims that Seroxat could cause addiction, self-harm, aggression and even suicide. The medicines regulator always denied there was evidence to back up these claims. But the programme revealed that, not only is the evidence there, it’s been lying dormant in the regulator’s archive for at least 13 years.

One insider told the programme: “I have little confidence that the drugs they’re licensing day by day are being licensed in a way that I would feel appropriate and – I have very little confidence in drugs that have been regulated in the past.”

What the programme uncovered led to some of the most influential names in medicine asking if we’re being told the truth about the pills that we take. Dr Mike Shooter, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said: “It has serious implications for the whole of psychiatry, it has serious implications for the whole of medicine. I think a few years down the line we are going to be talking about this with many more sorts of medication.”

Secrets of the Drug Trials (Panorama starts about 3 minutes in)

Secrets of the Drug Trials Secret emails revealed that the UK’s biggest drug company distorted trial results of an anti-depressant, covering up a link with suicide in teenagers and was first broadcast on 29 January 2007. Panorama revealed that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) attempted to show that Seroxat worked for depressed children despite failed clinical trials. And that GSK-employed ghostwriters influenced ‘independent’ academics.

GSK faces action in the US where bereaved families have joined together to sue the company. As a result, GSK was forced to open its confidential internal archive. Karen Barth Menzies is a partner in one of the firms representing many of the families. She examined thousands of the documents which are stored, box upon box, in an apartment in Malibu, California. She said: “Even when they have negative studies that show that this drug Seroxat is going to harm some kids they still spin that study as remarkably effective and safe for children.”

GSK’s biggest clinical trial of Seroxat on children was held in the US in the 1990s and called Study 329. Child psychiatrist Dr Neal Ryan of the University of Pittsburgh was paid by GSK as a co-author of Study 329. In 2002 he also gave a talk on childhood depression at a medical conference sponsored by GSK. He said that Seroxat could be a suitable treatment for children and later told Panorama reporter Shelley Jofre that it probably lowered rather than raised suicide rates.

In amongst the archive of emails in Malibu, Shelley was surprised to find that her own emails to Dr Ryan from 2002 asking questions about the safety of Seroxat had been forwarded to GSK asking for advice on how to respond to her. She also found an email from a public relations executive working for GSK which said: “Originally we had planned to do extensive media relations surrounding this study until we actually viewed the results. Essentially the study did not really show it was effective in treating adolescent depression, which is not something we want to publicise.”

The editor in chief of the British Medical Journal, Fiona Godlee, said that what she calls the “blind-eye culture of medicine” should be exposed by professionals. She has written in response to the Panorama film: “We shouldn’t have to rely on investigative journalists to ask the difficult questions. “Reputations for sale are reputations at risk. We need to make that risk so high it’s not worth taking.”

The Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) began a criminal investigation into GSK in the first week of October 2003… but still no action has been taken as yet.

Seroxat Withdrawal

Seroxat Withdrawal – This video shows what 5 days without Seroxat looks like – Werxie writes “Me after 5 days without taking Seroxat/Paxil(paroxetine). I was going to edit up the 15 minute video I made so most of the crap was taken out but I can’t concentrate long enough to do that. I have been taking it for 6 years, and this was a sudden withdrawl (I was waiting for a prescription). They suggest tapering the dosage to come off them, though there is much anecdotal evidence showing the difficulties people can have. I would honestly ask if your doctor could put you on one of the other SSRIs. Seroxat seems to be the worst to come off.”

Voices that need to be heard

Voices that need to be heard – This video is one of many that can be found on YouTube and other such websites. It was made by a Seroxat Survivor – someone who understands what the drug can make you do and make you feel.

Paxil addiction stories

Paxil addiction stories – This report is from ABC Primetime Live in America – strong stuff indeed.

GlaxoSmithkline suppresses Paxil/Seroxat trial data

GlaxoSmithkline suppresses Paxil/Seroxat trial data – Yes, you read it right… if the clinical trial data doesn’t show drugs in a good light what can be done? Hang on, I know – just hide the results and lie about them! This from World News Tonight on ABC in America.

Uncomfortably Numb

Uncomfortably Numb – a film maker records his own Paxil/Seroxat withdrawal nightmare.

Antidepressants and School Shootings, Suicide, Addiction

Antidepressants and School Shootings, Suicide, Addiction – it’s hard to believe, but they give these drugs to children… this is a shocking video. Pay particular attention to the impassive members of the FDA panel listening to the horror stories being told to them.

Antidepressants exposed

Antidepressants exposed – Professor David Healy in this video.

School shootings – Fox news on the anti depressant connection

Why aren’t medical records of shooters being released? How long do we have to wait for an investigation?

Dr Peter Breggin – Medication Madness

A three part interview from Fox News from July 2008.

Why don’t people listen to the likes of Peter Breggin and David Healy?

Why don’t the drug companies listen? Why aren’t the drugs safe?

Seroxat and Paxil lies… from the horse’s mouth!

This is a great compilation of some of the things that have been said about Seroxat.

Werxie’s video almost made me cry. Is he alright?

  2. pythia Says:

Lynn, Werxie will get better. If my experience is anything to go by, there is a chance he may be relatively physically OK by now depending on when this video was shot.

I recognise it all, had it all and then some and although it took more than two years before it slowly started to get better, the chewing and the other involuntary movements are now rare and when they do come back, they are limited to the face and jaw. At almost four years off all SSRIs, I still have muscle dystonia and my head sometimes starts to twist from side to side but it´s not in any way as bad as it used to be.

Our bodies will eventurally heal given enough time but the shock, terror, anger and humiliation of going from being a normal, healthy human being to a shaking, twitching, chewing, spastic wreck and having your reality and experience completely invalidated by the entire medical community is something that will come back to haunt me and countless others for the rest of our lives.

  3. Lynn Says:

I’m so sorry for all you’ve been through. Thank you for answering my post. I hope some people who have suffered so much can fight the gag orders to keep the companies from hiding behind them. They shouldn’t have to but until the people who are supposed to be dealing with this get more energetic, the victims will have to keep fighting, and their determination will show the powers that be how serious their suffering is. I just can’t get over how this type of story gets repeated in the press over and over and no high profile person makes enough of a fuss to worry lawmakers.

  4. tessa Says:

Hi,I was on seroxat for while and had to go cold turkey to come off it,it was the most painful experience of my life, however although I survived I honestly believe it left me depressed and alcohol dependent, problems that I struggle with every day.I am awaiting help at present but I`m terrified the doctors will put me back on a anti depression pill that has the same devestating side effects as seroxat,it should be banned, and the company who make it should be sued,

  5. truthman30 Says:

    Hi Tessa..

GSk is being sued, and you would certainly not be the first to call for a ban of this horrible, dangerous and defective drug..
Seroxat cold turkey is hell on earth..
One thing to be thankful for is to be off the poison..
All the best with your journey..

  6. Lynn Says:

    Tessa,
I was lucky to refuse the Paxil prescription someone offered me. I had been hurt a little, relatively speaking by Celexa and Trazodone. One thing I know about those two drugs is that I was able to sleep for more than five hours a night a year after I stopped taking the drugs. It has been six and a half years now and I do feel calmer. I think it is possible that our brains can heal, at least somewhat. If you can get to a schema therapist where you are, I highly recommend that. The feeling of support you get with that type of therapist in my opinion can be a lifesaver, even though you didn’t start out with the kind of brain condition this therapy was created for. Hang in there. Try to get good nutrition and don’t give up. Don’t give up and let the bastards win.

When the hell are people going to stop dragging their kids into the docs office? Is it that hard to figure out that 1+1=2? For hell sakes, look at the school shootings these past two years.
    Money prevails, lives do not…

  8. sandra Says:

Howcome nowadays seroxat is not allowed for children age 7-17, but back in the 90’s it was…….I was given seroxat 40mg a DAY from my 14th till I was 18, much damage was caused due to this. I stopped when I was 18.Without knowing what caused this I became totally insane.
Then they put me back on this shit a yr later and I became suicidal I almost really did it.
I havent been taking it now for yrs but looking back at that time and the damage it has done.Something I have to continue living with the rest of my (young) life.
I feel i cant let these dirtbags get away with it.
I am physically disabled due to the suicidal period on seroxat that lasted half a yr.
God knows what happend to me in the yrs from my 14th untill my 18th.
I was dazed and drugged doing things without realising the consequences.
Im sorry but am i just supposed to sit back and take it that my life was taken from me by corrupt companies and incompetent doctors at the age of 14.

Thanks to the people that make this website.Unfortunately there’s really nowhere else to turn.

  9. truthman30 Says:

    Hey Sandra..

It wasn’t just kids that Seroxat messed up, I was prescribed it at the young age of 21 and it made me mentally insane and a physical mess, there are literally hundreds of thousands of lives it has destroyed, read up on this blog and the other out there, you will see the story of Seroxat, it is horrific..

You are in a way lucky that you have your whole young life ahead of you, many people older than you have no life left, many have been left with nothing, all and everything absolutely destroyed from Seroxat..

It is an absolute disgrace that it was prescribed to anybody, let alone kids, I understand where you are coming from, many of us do.. Seroxat has destroyed countless lives and it continues to… I hope you can educate others about Seroxat, bringing awareness is to the key to changing things and making sure nothing like it ever happens again to anybody…

    All the best 🙂

  10. Lynn Says:

    Dear Sandra,
I am so sorry for what your doctor and Glaxo did to you. Glaxo is an obscenity. You might want to write to Senator Grassley and tell him your story.

If you are lucky enough to have insurance that covers psychologists, schema psychologists are more empathic that regular ones.
From what I have researched, I truly believe that the brain and body can heal and improve. If you don’t have the proof to join the lawsuits, you can at least ask to go to a physical therapist and use cognitive therapy techniques to increase your control over your mind and make yourself stronger. Don’t let the bastards win. You can do it!

  11. Lynn Says:

Thanks for getting the Dr. Breggin interview. I have never heard him speak.

  12. John Downing Says:

I was put on Prozac then later put on Seroxat. These drugs have recently been given a bad reputation because of the side-effects and Seroxat is the worse of the two. I was on these drugs for several (five or more) years, yet I understand that they are meant to be used for a few months at a time. To make things worse, I was put on double the recommended dose for six months or more when I was on Seroxat. I still suffer from side effects well over a year after I slowly took myself off the drug but I can’t remember exactly how long that was because I now have memory problems.

I have constant itching under the skin and a dry patch appeared on my back and I had marks on my arms and legs when I was first put on Seroxat. There are another side-effects and some are far worse! I know it sounds unbelievable but I get electric shocks in my head that can effect my whole being. At it’s worse, it is like I disappear for a moment, that’s the only way I can explain it.

The other night I was woke up with the most intense ZAP I have had (it made a sound in my ears and a flash of light). It was different to the last one and it made me feel strange and detached from reality and I was worried about going to sleep again in case it happened again. It’s a wonder I didn’t pull a muscle or fall out of my bed. If I had been stood up I would certainly have fallen down but the big shocks happen mostly at night when I am very tired.

The first time it happened, years ago, I was walking to a shop late at night to get some cigs and it is a wonder I didn’t fall into the road and get run over by a car.

If I moved or my head too quickly, I would get another shock and it took me a long time to get back home. I believe that the medication has done damage to my brain.

I can feel it coming on especially at night, or when I have had a busy day when I’m very tired (I am tired most of the time). Is this a form of epilepsy I wonder? I don’t know but I do know it began with Seroxat.

Apart from that I have a septic toe and it was painful to walk for weeks, then the other day I came down with something, I don’t know what it was, but I felt very ill after a trip out on Saturday and I spent most of Sunday in bed so I didn’t eat.

Then as has been the case for many years, when I eat the first meal of the day it often makes me feel ill like I am about to die and I have to lay down when that happens. I have other problems too, since I was on these type of drugs I forget things and I can get lost in the city when before I wouldn’t forget.
    …………..
    ^^^
The above was written by me several years ago (ten years?) and after all this time I *still* sometimes get the electric shocks in my head!

Then since I was on Seroxat I have become seriously alcoholic (sometimes drinking a bottle of Vodka or more a day) whereas before Seroxat, drinking alchohol was not a real problem. The general hospital refuse to treat alchohol addiction and a couple of weekends ago I was thinking of commiting suicide.

  13. Rose Says:

hi. My doctor told me that Seroxat is safe, it is not addictive and most of all, it won’t mess my life up.
Then he told me to stop the pills one day after i told him what i read about the pills, on the internet.
From that day till now (it’s been some months), i feel like there’s something inside of me that keeps changing. Suddenly i get irritated by almost everything, i yell for no reason to my girlfriend, i think she is against me all the time, i can’t see straight to recognize my own mistakes, my mood keeps getting up and down, some weird headaches out of a sudden that last just 2-3 seconds but feel like hell, my sleep time is getting worse day by day, i get some rashes all over my body created from anxiety and i feel extremely sad when my mood is low. Some times i even want to end it all but then my mood changes again and i feel a lot better.
Why is this happening to me? Why after stopping the pills for about 5 months now, i keep getting these reactions? what went wrong?

  14. samreen Says:

after going through all the pages of the seroxite website now im soo scared as i had been daignoised as having depression and phcycosomatic disorder,T he dr.prescribed seroxat to me after giving me a series of antidepressents which realy dint work.and now i feel exactly the same kind of withdrawal symptoms as others im trying im all my best to get over them but not able to..seroxat sure causes dependency.

  15. stephen eaton Says:

i,ve been taking seroxat since 1997 (15 years ) , i,ve been trying to come off it now for the last 18 months but i,am suffering from withdrawal symptoms , sweating , headaches.memory loss etc . i,m down to 20mg a day now after being up to a high of 50mg at my worst point a few years ago , my docter suggests taking 10mg on alternate days but even this causes the dreadfull withdrawal symtoms , i fear i,m gonna be on seroxat all my life , with the continuing side affects . HELP !! , i have not been able to work now for 5 years !!!

  16. Tessy Says:

Seroxat is out of your system in 20 hours, so taking it every other day is really going to confuse your brain. You need to see if you can get liquid seroxat and go down 5mg at the most at a time. Go to this website for support – http://www.seroxatusergroup.org.uk/
